WHAT LED TO OUR CONCERN REGARDING LIMITED TRASH CANS AND LITTERING
Hurricane Ida
Hurricane Ida was a deadly and destructive Category hurricane that hit New York on September 1st. In New York there were 18 deaths recorded.
Many people lost their homes because of flash flooding. Many people did not have electricity for weeks. Ida caused at least $50 million in damage in NY alone according to Governor Hochul and impacted 1,200 homes. Stormwater rushed into homes and created a lot of damage.

Although we do not live super close to the ocean, our neighborhood in Bushwick was affected. A contributing factor was that our sewers were clogged because of the disruption in our ecosystem. Below you can find some pictures and articles explaining more about the effects on our community.

What We Believe In
We are here to ensure the community and local leaders have the knowledge, resources and opportunities to make a real change in society. We created a QR code to bring you to this destination where you can educate yourself about the impact trash has had on our local community in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Our idea was to post QR codes on trash bins to inspire people in our community to learn more about the problem we have.
We decided to create persuasive letters to encourage change with the addition of additional trash bins and pickups to eliminate litter all over our neighborhood. We do not want to experience flooding like we did during Hurricane Ida and avoid clogged sewers and waterways. Below is a letter we helped craft to the Department of Sanitation to make a change.
